Fonon Highlights BlackStar Wafer Dicing Machine for Semiconductor Industry Applications

ORLANDO, Fla., March 29, 2024Fonon Corporation, a multi-market holding company, R&D center, equipment designer and manufacturer of advanced laser material processing systems for subtractive and additive manufacturing, highlights its BlackStar Wafer Dicing Machine for applications in the semiconductor industry.

The BlackStar is powered by Fonon’s patented Fantom Width Laser Dicing technology (FWLD), an innovative next-generation method of splitting brittle materials in a cost-effective way that involves no material loss.

The manufacturing of semiconductor chips involves cutting, or singulating, small-scale dies out of silicon wafers. Common challenges in this process include the high potential for defects and distortions, as well as the unavoidable material waste. Silicon sawing tools can cause cracks and chipping, while also resulting in material waste at the line of blade contact.

Fonon’s BlackStar offers a solution to these challenges, providing for a higher yield of dies per wafer and maximizing throughput while maintaining the integrity of the material. The FWLD technology splits materials at the molecular level at tremendous speed with near-zero kerf width. In summary, a narrower kerf width results in more chips per wafer, hence the material loss is reduced. Eliminating such manufacturing waste lowers production time and costs.

Non-contact laser processing separates wafers effectively, preventing flaking at the cut edge. With Fonon’s automated single-step processing, the quality of the edges – one of the critical criteria for fracture resistance – is further improved. Increased die strength during chip package construction also directly impacts dependability and quality.

Fonon’s FWLD technology allows for the production of multiple size dies on the same wafer and the dicing of complex shapes. Each die can be cut individually regardless of shape, size, or position. The process can involve using a backing tape frame for stability, along with dry processing, which eliminates water use and extra handling steps.

The BlackStar can dice a wide variety of semiconductor materials, including silicon, gallium arsenide, germanium, indium phosphide, silicon carbide, gallium nitride, gallium phosphide and other compound materials.

Fonon Corporation Highlights Its Laser Cutting Technology for Heavy Equipment Manufacturing

ORLANDO, Fla., March 1, 2024 – Fonon Corporation, a multi-market holding company, R&D center, equipment designer and manufacturer of advanced laser material processing systems for subtractive and additive manufacturing, highlights applications for its Titan FX Laser Cutting Systems for heavy equipment manufacturing.

Many of the most popular metal materials used in manufacturing heavy equipment and machine parts – aluminum, brass, and copper – are defined as highly reflective materials. Each material brings a unique combination of benefits: strength, durability, heat- and corrosion-resistance, and heat and electrical conductance. Yet fabricators who use traditional methods to process these metals often face challenges that can result in poor cut quality.

“Highly reflective material” is a term that almost all metal processing practitioners know. The term is used to define a material, the surface of which reflects 92%-98% of visible light, plus a similar portion of medium and far infrared radiation in solid form. Such materials require peak laser power for effective surface processing. Fonon Corporation’s Titan FX Laser Cutting System presents the most advanced, high-performance, reliable, cost-effective way to cut reflective metal. Titan FX lasers do not use mirrors and delicate lenses, so the reflection from metals like copper, aluminum and brass does not damage the cutting equipment. The fiber laser source incorporates a proprietary built-in back-reflection isolator (sometimes called a beam dump for reflective laser light that protects the source from back-reflections (or back-scatter) generated by the workpiece. The whole cutting process is safe and stable, without any damage to the laser source.

More important, Titan FX equipment incorporates an advanced direct drive motion system, CleanCut technology and adaptive thin-to-thick fiber laser beam shaping, which benefit businesses that need to precisely cut highly reflective metals at production-level speed, balancing high acceleration, cut speeds and positioning with maximum accuracy. For common materials processing, they achieve speeds three to four times faster than CO2 lasers of equal wattage.

Traditional flatbed laser cutting systems rely on rack and pinion, ball screws, or belt drives to traverse the cutting head face limitations common to all mechanical, high-contact systems, including wear and tear of the gears, reduced belt tension over time and damage from the inevitable accretion of contaminants, grit and dust generated by normal production conditions. Fonon’s Direct Drive Motion System lifts the cutting head smoothly and quickly across the working surface area. Without ball screws, belts, or gears to deteriorate or break down, Fonon’s Titan FX delivers smoother motion, higher cutting head acceleration and speed, less stress and vibration on the carriage frame, a lower system weight and decreased maintenance requirements.

Conventional laser cutting methods create an area of discoloration, weakening and stressing the material on either side of a cut associated with an excessive heat affected zone. CleanCut technology reduces or eliminates the heat affected zone by producing a beam narrower and more precise than any conventional laser.

Adaptive thin-to thick beam shaping technology automatically adjusts the laser beam’s properties to process a wide range of material thicknesses. This capability takes advantage of Fonon’s deep understanding of the reflective characteristics of any given material when it reaches the temperature at which it transitions from a solid to a liquid or gas, driving more economical operation, superior edge quality on thick plates and high-speed cutting of thin materials.

Heavy equipment and machine part manufacturers that make use of Fonon’s Titan FX Series typically experience a 10%-30% increase in speed and accuracy and a 10%-30% decrease in kerf loss over similar systems. They are also operator- and regulation-friendly and environmentally responsible, guaranteeing operational excellence, which aids their customers’ pursuit of sustainable market growth. For these reasons, Fonon’s Laser Cutting Technology continues to gain momentum for this and other industries working with highly reflective metals.

Fonon Corporation Highlights 3D Laser Glass Cutting Systems for Glass Manufacturing Applications

ORLANDO, Fla., Jan. 10, 2024 – Fonon Corporation, a multi-market holding company, R&D center, equipment designer and manufacturer of advanced laser material processing systems for subtractive and additive manufacturing, highlights applications for its 3D Laser Glass Cutting Systems in glass manufacturing industries.

Fonon’s patented 3D Zero Width Laser Cutting Technology (ZWLCT) is an innovative, next-generation technology. Demand for these systems has steadily increased as new flat panel display, semiconductor and electronic manufacturing facilities continue to emerge globally to support market growth and cost reduction initiatives.

ZWLCT has been optimized for thin-glass applications up to 1.0mm. The ZWLCT process splits materials at the molecular level with tremendous speed while eliminating material loss, chips, lateral cracks, protrusions, hooks, flares, or any form of contaminants.

Unlike conventional mechanical scribe methods, ZWLCT totally eliminates surface degradation and yield loss due to particulate damages caused by undesirable contaminants. The result is excellent surface integrity of the cut surface with no cracks or chips.

At the molecular level, Fonon’s patented ZWLCT generates a controlled micro-crack to any selectable depth through glass (and other brittle materials) at a controlled, optimized angle to the surface of the material. By controlling the laser beam’s energy distribution under a proprietary temperature stress profile, the process creates scribe lines in a prescribed manner with no molecules leaving the surface of the glass.

ZWLCT incorporates controlled heating with the correct power density profile, followed by glass surface cooling. This creates glass substrate intermolecular separation to a predetermined depth, dramatically improving substrate separation and overall quality. The process is easily adaptable to glass thickness changes during production. Other advantages of 3D ZWLCT include its ability to process unlimited component sizes up to Gen-10 and higher.

Manufacturers and consumers who utilize ZWLCT technology benefit from higher material strength as the tech reduces production and handling damage at the factory while reducing premature latent product failures in the field due to shock. Fonon Corporation’s Micro-Stamping Technology Enhances Ballistics Identification Allowing Traceability to Firearms

Micro-engraving unique ID Codes on firing pins provide forensic scientist with new tools for solving crime scenes

LAKE MARY, FL-(August 18th, 2015)- Fonon Corporation (“Fonon”) is pleased to announce recent advances in laser micro-engraving technology allowing the precise, microscopic stamping of unique ID codes on firing pins making it possible to link shell casings recovered at crime scenes to the firearm that fired them.  When the firearm is discharged, a unique alpha-numeric code identifying the weapon’s make, model and serial number is “fingerprinted” onto the primer or rim of the cartridge case.

Fonon’s advanced micro-stamping technology now provides firearm manufacturers with new tools that help law enforcement deter gun trafficking.  Traffickers generally purchase guns with the intent to illegally transfer the weapon to others.  Traffickers who purchases guns for this purpose would now be on notice that the cartridge shell could be used to trace the gun back to them if the gun was used in the commission of a crime.

081815The American Bar Association (ABA) has recommended that federal, state, and territorial governments enact microstamping laws that would enable law enforcement officers to identify the weapon used in a crime and the purchaser of the firearm.  The ABA concluded, “Microstamping technology will be a material aid to law enforcement in the effort to solve crimes committed by use of guns.”  With California taking the lead, similar legislation continues to be discussed in New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maryland, Wisconsin and Illinois with other states monitoring the legislation progress.
